Nadine Wakim, Senior Consultant, B.E, M.E (Hons., Environmental)
Nadine joined Waste Not in July 2008, bringing with her over 6 years experience working on a broad range of environmental infrastructure design, planning and policy projects for government and businesses in New Zealand. She has a sound knowledge of the waste industry and central and local government in New Zealand. Specific projects she has been involved with include the following:
- Completed a short-term contract at the Ministry for the Environment to review targets in the NZ Waste Strategy.
- Assisted two Auckland councils to determine household participation rates in kerbside refuse and recycling services.
- Investigated the potential for sewage sludge composting for Thames & Coromandel District Council.
- Seconded to North Shore City Council to develop a GIS-based mapping tool for council staff to identify stormwater issues and assess capital works projects.
- Member of the 2003/2004 IPENZ Presidential Taskforce on Sustainability and author of the Solid Waste and Water chapters in Sustainability and Engineering in NZ: Practical Guidelines for Engineers.
- Prepared an assessment of solid waste services for Waitakere City Council and reviewed Council's existing interim Waste Management Plan.
- Member of an Auckland-based engineering consulting team that delivered solutions for an Asian Development Bank-funded waste management project in the Cook Islands: National Waste Strategy and Waste Management Facilities.
- Worked with Tauranga District Council to undertake a home-vermicomposting trial with households and implement waste minimisation systems for pilot businesses.
- Researched the viability of composting multi-lined packaging for Tetra Pak Ltd.
- Part of a team that adapted the NZ Zero Waste Strategy (and associated Zero-Waste Action Planning Tool originally developed for Dunedin City) and trialled it with other local authorities.
- Completed a Masters thesis research project on developing best practices and product standards for worm-composting.
